Pet care tips

Winter safety tips:

During winter it is important for you as a pet owner to keep some simple—yet significant—pet-safety tips in mind.

  • Beware of sudden temperature changes. If it’s too cold for you it’s too cold for your dog no matter the breed or size.
  • If you must walk your dog cut back on the time, or take them out more often.
  • Put a coat on them if possible. Larger breeds don’t necessarily need one, but small dogs and senior dogs feel the cold.
  • Reduce the length of your walk especially if you notice your dog is shivering, or lifting the paws.
  • Boots are also another good option if you can manage to put them on. It helps with the salt and snow.
  • Just because you have a dog doesn’t mean you walk them in extreme temperatures. Walk them when weather is better.
  • If you have a fenced in yard make use of it. Most important is that they do their business. If you live in a condo let them out more often.
  • Be aware of your pet’s age and health issues. This also depends on whether you walk them or not.
  • Do not leave your furry family member in a vehicle for even just a couple of minutes.

  • Do not leave your furry family member in a vehicle for even just a couple of minutes.
  • The temperature can escalate fast and your pet can get overheated quicker than you think.
  • Remember they have a coat on.
  • Your pet can possibly die as a result of this.
  • Leave your pet at home if possible.
  • Walk your dog early morning and late evening or when temperatures are cooler so not to put unnecessary stress on your pet.
  • Reduce the length of your walk especially if you notice your dog is showing signs of heat exhaustion, breathing issues.

  • If you must be in your backyard or park, make sure your pet is under a tree in the grass out of the direct sun, has lots of water. A frozen kong with a treat is a great idea and keeps them busy.
  • Be aware of your pet’s age and health issues, senior dogs cannot handle extreme heat.
  • If your pet is sensitive to fireworks and storms, keep them inside to avoid stress.
  • If possible wet your dog down before a walk, or put a wet tee-shirt on, which will keep your dog cool while you walk.
  • Be a good pet owner, always remember to pick up after your pet.
